Subwoofer Box Types - Sealed, Ported, Vented, and Bandpass

Music is a way of life for many people, and nothing is more enjoyable for some than hitting the open road, or the rocky wilderness, in their Jeep Wrangler JK 2 and cranking the tunes and enjoying life. To boost that music experience, you need to be able to hear the full range of sound, from the lows to the highs, and an amazing subwoofer helps round out the sounds. But once you’ve bought your dream subwoofer, you need an enclosure for it. What enclosure type should you get? What kind of Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door subwoofer box should you go with? Below will summarize the effects of each, and when it is best to use them.

Sealed Enclosure

Sealed enclosures are often the smallest of all the varieties of subwoofer boxes because they do not require space for ports or vents. There are pros and cons to any subwoofer box, and being able to take up less space is a great pro if you don’t have a lot of space to spare to begin with—especially if you want to keep as much space free in your trunk as possible. Sealed enclosures are also good for door subwoofers, as they take up a lot less space and can actually fit. Due to the fact that sealed enclosures are sealed, and small, they also have less air inside them, and less air flow, so the boom from the subwoofer will be lower. You’ll need a more powerful amplifier and subwoofer combo; you also get more accurate bass response, though. If you consider using a sealed enclosure, make sure you have a higher wattage system.

Ported and Vented Enclosure

Ported and vented enclosures have additional space allocated to putting in vents, and if you have lots of space, it’s often one of the most popular solutions for people. With a port or vent, it allows for airflow, which allows for sound to come out of them more easily, giving much more boom effect at the cost of lower accuracy in bass response. The airflow also means you don’t need as high of a wattage of the system in order to get the sound level you desire, and you hear every bit of sound that it puts out.

Bandpass Enclosure

Bandpass enclosures are the largest of the subwoofer boxes available, because it has a number of ports and two main chambers, with enough space for a resonance within the box. It creates sound with the lowest accurate bass, but also the greatest level boom. With a bandpass enclosure you could outboom almost anybody on the streets, but you’ll have to sacrifice a large portion of your trunk in order to do so. With space as a premium, it’s probably not going to be your first choice in a Jeep Wrangler JK 2.
